Holiday Feeding

This year, we’re not going out-of-town for the holidays.  But, if you are, Captive Aquatics recently posted about how to care for your fish while you’re gone.

I think I’ve used all the described methods over the years. In the future, however, I’ll be hiring a fish sitter if I’m gone for longer than a weekend.  The rest of the methods just don’t work right.

Automatic Feeder

Automatic Feeder

I used an automatic feeder with the fish only marine aquarium.  But, the frozen brine shrimp kept on thawing out!  But seriously, this auto feeder was difficult to adjust the amount of flake food that it would dump out.  I suppose there are better ones out there, but I haven’t seen one yet.

I agree with the post author’s assessment of the block style auto feeders.  On the few times I used them in the past, the feeder usually had eroded very little after a week.  Even if the fish do eat the food, not much of it was released.

So, I will either feed the fish nothing if I’m away from home for 3 days or less.  Or, if I’m away for longer than 3 days, I’ll hire someone to come feed the fish and corals for the time that I’m away from home.
